Assignment 2: Elements of design, Two Points

The idea behind this assignment is to incorporate the insights you have learned so far on the course into a set of photographs directed towards one type of subject. You should produce at least 10 Photographs, all of a similar subject, which between them will show the following effects:

  • Single point dominating the composition
  • Two points
  • Several points in a deliberate shape
  • A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
  • Diagonals
  • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
  • At least two kinds of implied triangle
  • Rhythm
  • Pattern

Two Points

I have selected this shot to demonstrate two points. I feel that the main two points of the image are the statues heads, This shot was taken at Fountains Abbey NR Ripon.

Exp time = 1/400
F/Stop = F4.0
Focal length = 55mm
ISO =320

Assignment 2: Elements of Design, At least two kinds of implied triangle

The idea behind this assignment is to incorporate the insights you have learned so far on the course into a set of photographs directed towards one type of subject. You should produce at least 10 Photographs, all of a similar subject, which between them will show the following effects:

  • Single point dominating the composition

  • A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
  • Diagonals
  • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
  • At least two kinds of implied triangle
  • Rhythm
  • Pattern

At least two kinds of implied triangle

 I have chosen 3 images to represent two kinds of implied triangle. The first image is of a tree trunk at fountains abbey, the shape perfectly fits as an implied triangle.

The second image again demonstrates implied triangles at both sides of the image where the tree line falls down on both sides.

The third image for me demonstrates an inverted triangle with the base of the glass being narrower that the top of the glass, this is further enhanced by the angle of the shot.

Exp time = 1/80
F/Stop = F5
Focal length = 52mm
ISO = 320

Exp time = 1/60
F/Stop = F9
Focal length = 20mm
ISO = 250

Exp time = 1/320
F/Stop = F4.8
Focal length = 48mm

Assignment 2: Elements of Design, Distinct, even if irregular shapes

The idea behind this assignment is to incorporate the insights you have learned so far on the course into a set of photographs directed towards one type of subject. You should produce at least 10 Photographs, all of a similar subject, which between them will show the following effects:

  • Single point dominating the composition
  • Two points
  • Several points in a deliberate shape
  • A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
  • Diagonals
  • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
  • At least two kinds of implied triangle
  • Rhythm
  • Pattern

    Distinct, even if irregular shapes

     This was another picture that I found difficult to produce a shot for, the shot I have chosen is from a shoot around Leeds city center. The glass forms part of the Leeds shopping plaza it was not possible to get a shot from directly opposite the picture had to be taken from street level which slightly distorts the angle of the lines.
    I do however feel that this shot does demonstrate Distinct shapes (squares, rectangles, triangles).

    Exp time = 1/400
    F/Stop = F11
    Focal length = 38mm
    ISO = 400

    Assignment 2: Elements of design, Single point dominating the composition

    The idea behind this assignment is to incorporate the insights you have learned so far on the course into a set of photographs directed towards one type of subject. You should produce at least 10 Photographs, all of a similar subject, which between them will show the following effects:

    • Single point dominating the composition
    • Two points
    • Several points in a deliberate shape
    • A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
    • Diagonals
    • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
    • At least two kinds of implied triangle
    • Rhythm
    • Pattern

    Single point dominating the composition

    This for me demonstrates a single point dominating the composition although there are other points within the image the singular most prevalent point is the yacht. This was taken at Whitby, North Yorkshire.

    Assignment 2: Elements of Design, Rhythm

    The idea behind this assignment is to incorporate the insights you have learned so far on the course into a set of photographs directed towards one type of subject. You should produce at least 10 Photographs, all of a similar subject, which between them will show the following effects:

    • Single point dominating the composition
    • Two points
    • Several points in a deliberate shape
    • A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
    • Diagonals
    • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
    • At least two kinds of implied triangle
    • Rhythm
    • Pattern

    Rhythm

    For me this picture conveys rhythm and as the exercise required the eye follows the direction of the beech huts and you experience an optical beat. I think that the colour of the huts further enhances the effect of the optical beat and the angle of the shot leads you from one side to the other.

    Exp time = 1/200
    F/Stop = F7.1
    Focal length = 50mm
    ISO = 250

    Assignment 2: Elements of Design, Diagonals

    The idea behind this assignment is to incorporate the insights you have learned so far on the course into a set of photographs directed towards one type of subject. You should produce at least 10 Photographs, all of a similar subject, which between them will show the following effects:

    • Single point dominating the composition
    • Two points
    • Several points in a deliberate shape
    • A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
    • Diagonals
    • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
    • At least two kinds of implied triangle
    • Rhythm
    • Pattern

    Diagonals

    This shot for me conveys diagonal lines perfectly. The road leads me into the picture by means of the converging diagonals. The shot was taken on the Island of Lindasfarne in Northumberland.

    Exp time = 1/200
    F/Stop = F7.1
    Focal length = 18mm
    ISO = 100

    Assignment 2: Elements of Design, Pattern

    The idea behind this assignment is to incorporate the insights you have learned so far on the course into a set of photographs directed towards one type of subject. You should produce at least 10 Photographs, all of a similar subject, which between them will show the following effects:

    • Two points
    • Several points in a deliberate shape
    • A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
    • Diagonals
    • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
    • At least two kinds of implied triangle
    • Rhythm
    • Pattern

    Pattern

    This shot I found really difficult to capture within landscapes, The shot I have chosen is of a Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) mushroom, I have tried to convey the sense of pattern within the picture which leads you from one side to the other.

    Exp time = 1/2
    F/Stop = F18
    Focal length = 70mm
    ISO =200

    Assignment 2: Elements of Design, Curves

    The idea behind this assignment is to incorporate the insights you have learned so far on the course into a set of photographs directed towards one type of subject. You should produce at least 10 Photographs, all of a similar subject, which between them will show the following effects:

    • Single point dominating the composition
    • Two points
    • Several points in a deliberate shape
    • A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
    • Diagonals
    • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
    • At least two kinds of implied triangle
    • Rhythm
    • Pattern

    Curves

    For this sequence I have selected two shots from the pier in Whitby I have included both as the are taken from the same point both demonstrate curves. The first image I have converted to black & white, this was mainly due to the sky being quite overcast but the overall effect for me enhances the shot and introduces an air of moodyness into it.

    The second shot is taken from the same point looking back toward the town for me the colour version works much better here as there is much more detail which may possibly be lost if it was also converted to black and white.

    Exp time = 1/60
    F/Stop = F22
    Focal length = 18mm
    ISO = 800

     Exp time = 1/60

    • A combination of vertical and horizontal lines
    • Diagonals
    • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
    • At least two kinds of implies triangle
    • Rhythm
    • Pattern

    A combination of vertical and horizontal lines

    For this assignment image I have selected an image that was used as one of my project images. This was taken on a camera shoot around Leeds city center. The strong lines of the building and the perspective i choose hopefully demonstrates Vertical and Horizontal lines.

    The contrasting sky and the reflection in the glass for me also made the picture stand out even more.

    Exp time = 1/1250
    F/Stop = F7.1
    Focal length = 28mm
    ISO = 400

    Assignment 2: Elements of Design, Several points in a deliberate shape

    The idea behind this assignment is to incorporate the insights you have learned so far on the course into a set of photographs directed towards one type of subject. You should produce at least 10 Photographs, all of a similar subject, which between them will show the following effects:

    • Diagonals
    • Distinct, even if irregular shapes
    • At least two kinds of implied triangle
    • Rhythm
    • Pattern

    Several points in a deliberate shape

    I found this subject quite difficult to select an image for what I have gone for hopefully demonstrates points with shapes.

    This picture was taken on a trip to Whitby, North Yorkshire, the boat was returning from a fishing trip with calm seas. I thought it was a good opportunity to have a picture with a main focus point with additional points.
    I have chosen this photograph to demonstrate "several points in a deliberate shape" as I believe that with the boat as one of the points and the two lighthouses that can be seen as implied triangles and also demonstrate the relationship between points.
