Assignment 4: Applying lighting techniques, Form

For this assignment you will draw together the different lighting techniques you have been studying and apply them to one object. The idea is to use your new knowledge of lighting to bring out particular physical properties of the same object. it is also a test of your observation.

Choose any subject that you can move around and take about eight photographs of it, each in a different kind of lighting. You can use any light at all, from daylight to available artificial light, to photographic lighting.

My inspiration for this assignment was taken from a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture park. I wanted to try and capture the essence of a sculpture but on a lot smaller scale. I had tried to photograph some of the sculptures in a way that could be used for this assignment but the sheer size of some of them and quality of light on my visit made it quite difficult. So on my way back from the park I went shopping for a sculpture that I could photograph while being able to control the light and the subject would remain interesting to shoot.

While shooting the sculpture I used various different light sources. To prepare the sculpture for shooting a prepared a mini studio on a table top made out of several pieces of dark colored card. The object was surrounded on two sides by the card. The camera was tripod mounted and for this exercise I opted for a 70mm f/2.8 Macro lens. For additional light sources, I used an off camera flashgun with the camera in commander mode and the flash in remote mode and also used various gel covers with the flash to vary/enhance the light. I also used a small spot lamp with different coloured filters to vary the colour of light

Equipment
Camera: D300s
Lens:Sigma 70mmf/2.8
Flashgun
Triopd
Spot lamp

Form:
This is another way of describing the volume of an object - how 3 dimensional it looks. The modeling effect of the light and the way you deal with the shadows is all important. Try to show as much depth as possible in the subject.

Exp time =3 sec
F/Stop = F22
Focal length = 70mm
ISO =200

Texture:
This is the quality of the service detail. Fine detail, such as that on sandstone or skin, stands out best with a pattern of small, hard shadows, so you will have to consider both the diffusion (or lack of it) and the angle of the light. Of course, a shiny surface like chrome, although it is thought of as being smooth, also has a texture of kind.

Shape:
This quality has to do with the outline of an object - its edges. These are unlikely to stand out more clearly if they contrast with the background, and if there is minimum detail visible in the object.
