Project: Looking through the viewfinder 3

Exercise 7

A sequence of Composition

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 18/135mm

Subject: Family of Lemurs, Yorkshire wildlife park

The subject I chose for this was a family of Lemurs at a local wildlife park. I started taking shots of a lone female with her young in isolation from the main group. I then progressed through to a few family shots until I managed to get a portrait shot of a lone male which had moved away from the main group.

Exercise 7

Object in different positions in the frame

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 18/135mm

Subject: Museum Gardens York, 3 pictures taken of york abbey ruins

First shot center of the frame
Exp time = 1/250
F/Stop = F3.5
Focal length = 18mm
ISO = 800

Second shot center offset left
Exp time = 1/800
F/Stop = F3.8
Focal length = 26mm
ISO = 800

Third shot center offset right wider angle
Exp time = 1/640
F/Stop = F3.8
Focal length = 18mm
ISO = 800

The picture that best works for me in this sequence is picture no 2. The first picture in the sequence i believe is the least successful.

I think the subject & the background work well in this sequence as there are other references to the ruins in the same shot, so the main part of the subject is not in isolation with its surroundings.

Exercise 6

Fitting the frame to the subject

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 18/135mm

Subject: Museum Gardens York, 4 pictures taken of york abbey ruins

First shot of the scene
Exp time = 1/125
F/Stop = F14
Focal length = 20mm
ISO = 800

Tight in fit to the frame
Exp time = 1/40
F/Stop = F14
Focal length = 85mm
ISO = 800

Close up of part of the subject
Exp time = 1/160
F/Stop = F8
Focal length = 135mm
ISO = 800

Recompose for best shot
Exp time = 1/100
F/Stop = F10
Focal length = 28mm
ISO = 800

Exercise 5

Panning with different shutter speeds

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 18/135mm

Tripod

Series of 4 photographs taken on the same stretch of road as the previous exercise. Shots were taken at an exposure of 1/160 on an F/stop of 5.3 with a focal length of 75mm.
While the object remained in focus the background was blurred as expected.

From the results of both movement exercises the shots that I found to give the best results were shot no 2 from exercise 4, this shot froze the subject with the most level of detail

The best shot from the panning exercise was picture no2. This picture seemed to convey the greatest sense of movement while retaining the subject in focus.

Exercise 4

Shutter Speeds

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 18/135mm

Tripod

Subject: Location chosen was a busy road in the center of York, background was a green hedge. I Positioned myself approximately 20-25ft away from the road.

1st shot
Exposure time = 1/250
Focal length = 75mm
Vehicle still blurred

2nd shot
Exposure time = 1/800
Focal length = 75mm
Vehicle allot sharper

3rd shot
Exposure time = 1/80
Focal length = 75mm
Vehicle Blurring out again

4th shot
Exposure time = 1/20
Focal length = 75mm
Vehicle Blurring now even more pronounced

5th shot
Exposure time = 1/20
Focal length = 75mm

Exercise 3

Focus at different apertures

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 50mm

Tripod

Pictures taken of a small fence surrounding a childrens park

First Picture taken at F/1.8

Second picture taken at f/9.0

Third picture taken at F/22

Project: Focus 1

Exercise 2

Focus with a Set Aperture

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D80 Lens 50mm

Subject: Picture of window box with Flowers & Clothes on a washing line

The pictures I prefer in both instances are of the nearest focused object with the rest of the subject out of focus. It seems to enhance and able to focus the eye more.

When you look at the other two pictures you have to work much harder to see the focus on the subject as it appears some tome to be surrounded by confusion

Project: Getting to know your Camera

Exercise 1

Focal Length and Angle of View

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s Lens:18-135mm

  1. First picture taken at 50mm to match the same view as my eye (Standard)
  2. Second picture taken at 18mm which represented the widest possible angle
  3. Third shot taken at 135mm

The first picture had to be held up at arms length

(approx 26") to match exactly what my eye was seeing

Second picture was roughly about 12" away from my eyes

in order for it to match what I was seeing.

The third picture had to be held much much further away

in order for it to have the same view as what I was seeing
