Assignment 1 Contrasts Pair 6

Produce Sixteen photographs, group them in 8 pairs marked with the contrasts the aim to demonstrate.Also produce one photograph that demonstrates CONTRASTS in one picture

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 18/135mm

Tripod

Pair 6 Hard/Soft

Exp time = 1/100
F/Stop = F5.6
Focal length = 135mm
ISO = 100

Exp time = 10 Sec
F/Stop = F10
Focal length = 18mm
ISO = 400

Hard

My inspiration for this pairing was a photo I actually took last year (soft) The interesting colours and textures combined with the softness of the sand seemed to fit very well.
The hard shot I chose was some rope wound tightly round a wooden post that seemed to convey strength and hardness together.

With this image i wanted to try and show the hardness of the subject with the rope being so tightly wound around the wooden post.

Soft
This picture was taken at spurn point just before dawn the shot was on a 10 second exposure and tripod mounted.
I think because the sand takes up almost half the picture it does convey the feeling of softness along with many other textures and contrasts.

Assignment 1 Contrasts Pair 5

Produce Sixteen photographs, group them in 8 pairs marked with the contrasts the aim to demonstrate.
Also produce one photograph that demonstrates CONTRASTS in one picture

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 18/135mm

Lens 50mm

Tripod

1 x Flashgun

Pair 5 Straight/Curved

Exp time = 1/40
F/Stop = F1.8
Focal length = 50mm
ISO = 500

Exp time = 1/30
F/Stop = F1.8
Focal length = 50mm
ISO = 500

Straight
For this pairing of photographs I selected a child's guitar as to me it represented so many different contrasts in so many angles.

The first shot I used a wide aperture to create a good depth of filed within the shot. I focused on the back of the guitar where the strings attach to the rear bridge this to me is where the picture demonstrates most the contrast of straight.

Curved
With this shot I was trying to convey the shape of the guitar and focused on the main part of the curve with a wide aperture to push the rest of the guitar out of focus.

Assignment 1 Contrasts Pair 4

Produce Sixteen photographs, group them in 8 pairs marked with the contrasts the aim to demonstrate.
Also produce one photograph that demonstrates CONTRASTS in one picture

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Camera: Nikon D80

Lens 18/135mm

Tripod

1 x Flashgun

Pair 4 Thick/Thin

Exp time = 1/125
F/Stop = F5
Focal length = 62mm
ISO = 400

Exp time = 1/60
F/Stop = F5.6
Focal length = 135mm
ISO = 400

Thick
Whilst I was on holiday I saw these fence posts that had been made to look like giant crayons, I thought it would make a great contrast to the small crayons.

Thin
My inspiration for this pairing was my daughters crayons. I wanted something that was colourful yet would convey its size compared to the thick selection.

I selected a variation of colours, placed them on a white background and experimented with various shapes/configurations. An external flash and tripod were used to capture the final shot.

Assignment 1 Contrasts Pair 3

Produce Sixteen photographs, group them in 8 pairs marked with the contrasts the aim to demonstrate.
Also produce one photograph that demonstrates CONTRASTS in one picture

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 18/135mm

Tripod

Pair 3 High/Low

Exp time = 1/400
F/Stop = F13
Focal length = 18mm
ISO = 400

Exp time = 1/800
F/Stop = F5.6
Focal length = 35mm
ISO = 800

High
My inspiration for this shot was York Minster. I wanted to convey its height as it stands head and shoulders above everything else in the city.

I positioned myself near the entrance and mounted the camera on the tripod, I tried to achieve symmetry and balance while trying to convey the height of the subject

Low
For my low shot I wanted to use a feature at the base of the Minster, something at ground level that would still show some of the main subject but also have recognisable features of the Minster

Assignment 1 Contrasts Pair 2

Produce Sixteen photographs, group them in 8 pairs marked with the contrasts the aim to demonstrate.
Also produce one photograph that demonstrates CONTRASTS in one picture

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Lens 18/135mm

Tripod

1 x Flashguns

Pair 2 Many/Few

Exp time = 1/10
F/Stop = F11
Focal length = 135mm
ISO = 400

Exp time = 1/10
F/Stop = F13
Focal length = 135mm
ISO = 200

Many
For my many shot I had seen some shots of droplets of water on a photography website and tried to create a similar effect.

To create this shot I used the surface of a Silver car, I polished the metal surface so as to allow the water droplets to bead off once sprayed over the metal.

With the droplets of water beading i positioned the camera on a tripod and took a series of exposures.

Few
For this shot I used some of my children's wooden toys.

I prepared a black background on which the subjects would sit in order for the items to stand out and not have any distractions from anything else in the shot. I positioned the items and took a series of shots with the camera on the tripod a flash was mounted above the camera directed toward the ceiling. I then used a reflector to bounce the light back onto the subject.

Assignment 1 Contrasts Pair 1

Produce Sixteen photographs, group them in 8 pairs marked with the contrasts the aim to demonstrate.

Also produce one photograph that demonstrates CONTRASTS in one picture

Equipment:

Camera: Nikon D300s

Camera: Nikon D80

Lens 18/135mm

Tripod

2 x Flashguns

Pair 1 Liquid/Solid

Exp time = 1/800
F/Stop = F5.6
Focal length = 135mm
ISO = 1000

Exp time = 1/60
F/Stop = F5.6
Focal length = 135mm
ISO = 1000

Liquid
My inspiration for the liquid photograph was from an article I read in a photography magazine.
I was attempting to catch a droplet of liquid at the moment of impact.

For the liquid I used a bowl of water and added milk to give it a thicker consistency, I then added some red food colouring.

I positioned the camera on the tripod with one flash attached to the camera and positioned the second flash off to the left of the main subject. I took a series of shots dropping milk into the liquid from a straw approximately 12" above the red liquid.

The shutter was controlled by means of a remote cable.

Solid
I chose the camera body for this shot as it represents to me something that is solid and sturdy when held. i tried to get an angle that captured the texture & feel of the camera that might convey its solid feel.
